SENIOR CARE

Dr Green examines a senior pet.

Ensure your pet's golden years are happy

The goal of senior pet care is to provide your pet with the best quality of life for as long as possible.  Early diagnosis of an abnormality is the most efficient means of controlling the disorder and preventing it from becoming a life threatening condition.  Working together, we can insure our loyal friends enjoy the longest and healthiest life possible.

Geriatric Care

What is the importance of my pet being a senior?

Senior pets need more medical care than do their younger counterparts.  Just as with people, pets are enjoying longer, more active, and healthier lives.  The goal of senior care is to provide your pet with the best quality of life for as long as possible.

What medical services does my geriatric pet need?

At Greenbelt, we have devised a Geriatric Comprehensive Exam.  This exam provides us with a great deal of information about your pet's physical condition.

Comprehensive Geriatric Exam

Complete physical exam - in depth physical which evaluates every aspect of your pet from haircoat to checking integrity of nerves to checking for arthritis pain.

CBC - blood test looking for anemia, infection, clotting, or bone marrow disorder.

Chemistry profile - blood test to evaluate the function of many internal organs.

Urinalysis - urine sample provides valuable information about kidney function and bladder integrity.

ECG - direct monitor of heart function.  Evaluates electrical activity of the heart and is capable of exposing numerous abnormalities.

Chest radiograph - evaluates heart size and shape as well as lungs and surrounding organs.

Shiotz tonomoter - checks for glaucoma

Fecal exam - checks for intestinal parasites, these often go undetected and work against our senior pets.

Heartworm/Ehrlichia test - blood test checking for heartworms and tick fever.  Both diseases are present in Midland and can be detrimental to our pet's health.

Thyroid level - blood test evaluating thyroid function.  Low thyroid can lead to obesity, lethargy, dull haircoat, and has detrimental effects on many body organs.

What does this exam cost?

At Greenbelt Veterinary Hospital, we feel very strongly about providing our seniors with excellent preventive care.  Performing all of these tests seperately would cost more than completing all of these in one visit.  Please contact us for an estimate for a Geriatric Exam today.
